AZKALS kick off countdown for Kasambahay Bill, ILO 189
April 29, Quezon City - The Azkals graced the Araw ng Kasambahay today held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle. Amidst shrieks from the crowd of over a thousand domestic workers and their supporters, Team Captain Chieffy Caligdong gave his message of support:
“Nandito kami para magbigay ng suporta sa mga kasambahay. Matagal na silang parte ng ating tahanan, at panahon na para mabigyan sila ng proteksyon. It’s time to blow the final whistle: I-ratify ang ILO Convention 189 (on Decent Work for Domestic Workers) at ipasa ang Batas Kasambahay!”
The Batas Kasambahay recognizes that domestic workers deserve the same legal rights and protections that are enjoyed by other workers.
The Araw ng Kasambahay 2k12 marked the start of concerted actions by domestic workers and their supporters to hold government accountable to their promises. The event was organized by SUMAPI (Samahan at Ugnayan ng mga Mangagawang Pantahanan sa Pilipinas, Inc.) and Visayan Forum Foundation, Inc.
Caligdong was joined onstage by Misagh Bahadoran, Patrick Reichelt and Carlie Martínez de Murga. In the photo, the Azkals get down and dirty while decorating a canvass that served as the official countdown urging the passage of the Kasambahay Bill and the ratification of ILO 189.
"Lilibeth Masamloc, SUMAPI president, receives a signed football from the Azkals."
