The Philippines’ opportunity to appear in the Challenge Cup finals was unsuccessful following a 2-1 defeat to 2010 runners-up Turkmenistan at Dasrath Rasangala Stadium.
The Azkals went to the match with Marwin Angeles, Misagh Bahadoran and Jason De Jong in the starting lineup. Usual starter Jason Abbott Sabio was ruled out due to injury while James Younghusband and Angel Guirado were rendered ineligible after receiving their second yellowcards in the game against Tajikistan.
Paul Mulders’ cross on the 25th minute found Phil Younghusband who headed home the opening goal.
Turkmenistan had their first chance on goal when Gahrymanberdy Chonkaev fired a shot that beat Etheridge but went over the crossbar.
Azkals’ could have gotten a second goal when Ray Jonsson, who found the ball from Phil Younghusband's corner kick, drove a point blank strike but was superbly denied by Rahmanberdi.
The runners-up went for another attack as Amanov and Chonkaev linked up but failed to drive the ball home on an open target on the 41st minute.
Three minutes later, Turkmen found the back of the net when Soyunow headed the ball past Neil Etheridge only to be disallowed by the linesman for offside giving the Philippines 1-0 advantage at half-time.
The second half kicked off with Turkmenistan dominating possession and Azkals choosing to be more defensive.
On the 76th minute, an effort from Jason De Jong only reached the Turkem keeper.
Turkmenistan’s equalizer came from Amanov’s powerful shot from outside the box that evaded the Fulham keeper on the 80th minute.
Six minutes later, Roel Gener was dispossessed by Abylov Guvanch in the penalty area giving him enough time to pass it to who slotted home the winning goal.
Etheridge was sent off on the stoppage time after having an incident with Chongkayev. The Fulham keeper was replaced by defender Carli De Murga who, later, saved a Turkmenistan shot on goal.
Philippines is left to play for third place against the defeated team between North Korea and Palestine on Monday. Azkals will play without the service of Etheridge.
